帰ってきた渡り鳥たち（２）

Returning Migratory Birds vol.2
クリーマーズ・フィールド野鳥保護区はSandhill CraneとCanadian Gooseで
たちまち大混雑となりました。
Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge has become very crowded with
Sandhill Cranes and Canadian Geese.
がぁがぁととってもにぎやかなのが想像できますでしょうか。
Can you imagine that they are very noisy with quacks?
渡り鳥さんたちはしばらくここで羽を休めたあと、さらに南のアメリカ本土へと旅立ちます。
After they take a rest for while, they leave to south, to the lower 48.
そんなに長い旅ばかりしていて、疲れないんでしょうかね。
Why aren't they tired with so long journey?
旅といえば今年、たった一羽で渡り鳥のごとくアラスカに帰ってきた旅人がいます。
それはこの中、アラスカ大学博物館です。
Talking about journey, there is also a man coming back to Alaska from his journey in this year, like a lonely migratory bird.
He is in the museum of University of Alaska.

星野道夫という写真家をご存知でしょうか？
18歳のときエスキモーの村にホームステイしたのをきっかけに、７年後にアラスカ大学に留学。
アラスカを愛して止まず、氷山の漂う東南アラスカの海から厳冬期のマッキンリー山まで旅し、
それを写真集やエッセイに綴り、しまいにはフェアバンクスに住みついてしまった写真家です。
Do you know a photographer named Michio Hoshino?
He did home stay in an Eskimo village when he was eighteen years old, and studied in University of Alaska
seven years later. He loved Alaska so much that traveled from glacial sea of Southeast Alaska to
Mt. McKinley in extreme coldness, photographed them, and wrote some essays of them. He lived in Fairbanks finally.
残念なことに、1996年、彼はシベリアでクマに襲われて亡くなっています。
Sadly, he was killed by bear in Siberia in 1996.
彼はアラスカ大学で勉強を始めた年、日記の始めにこう記したそうです。
「僕はアラスカの白地図の上に、自分の体験の地図を描きたかった。」
He wrote in his diary entry in the year when he started to study in University of Alaska,
"I hoped to draw a map of my personal experience on top of the blank map of Alaska."
彼の旅したアラスカの大地。
The land of Alaska, he traveled.
渡り鳥が旅を終えたとき。
彼は、彼の白地図を満たすことができたのでしょうか。
I wondered, when the migratory bird had ended his journey,
he could have filled his blank map. . .
