Spring in Fairbanks.
ひゃ〜、鳥さんたちがいっぱぁ〜い。。
Wow, bunch of bards!
そう、フェアバンクスの春は渡り鳥たちとともにやってくるんです。
今、一番多いのは、首に白い帯があるCanadian Goose（カナダ雁）さんたちでしょうか。
Yes, the spring in Fairbanks comes with dozens of migrating bards.
Most of them are now Canadian Geese, who have white tie on their neck.
いや〜それにしてもすごい混雑。。
Sandhill Crane（鶴の仲間）さんなんかもいます。
It looks too crowded. .
There are also Sandhill Cranes.
それと白鳥さんがなぜか一羽だけ。
仲間たちとはぐれちゃったんでしょうか。
And Swan too, but she is alone.
Is she lost from her group?
鳥たちがフェアバンクスに春をもたらすころ、隣り町ネナナではもう一つ春を告げるイベントがあります。
それは、う〜んこれ、何だと思います？
During birds bring the spring to Fairbanks, there is another event in Nenana, next town to Fairbanks,
which also tells us that spring has come.
What do you think of this?
実はこれ、ネナナの近くを流れるタナナ河の融ける時期を予想する州公認のギャンブル、
「ネナナ・アイス・クラシック」の小道具なんです。
タナナ河の上にこのように巨大な三脚を立て、それを岸にある時計小屋にロープでつなぎます。
It is an instrument for a gamble, "Nenana Ice Classic", in which people bet when
the ice of Tanana River will break up. A huge tripod is stood on the ice of Tanana River and a rope
is tied between the tripod and clock house, which exists on riverside.
タナナ河が融けて氷が流れ出すと三脚がロープを引っ張って時計を止め、その年の勝者が決まります。
なんでも、アラスカ鉄道建設の技術者たちがタナナ河に橋を架けるとき、氷の融ける予想時期を賭けたのが始まりだとか。
この賭けに参加するためのチケットは、レストランやお酒屋さんなんかで1枚2ドルほどで買えます。
チケットに氷が融ける予想日、午前／午後、時、分と、自分の名前や連絡先を書いて赤い缶に投函するだけ。簡単です。
締め切りは4月上旬だったでしょうか。
When the ice melts and breaks up, the tripod pulls rope and clock is stopped, and
then, the winner(s) of this year is determined.
I heard engineers who made a bridge on Tanana River for Alaska Railroad began this gamble.
Tickets to participate in the gamble can be bought at restaurants or liquor stores and
it costs two dollars per a ticket. You have to write your name, address, date, am/pm, hour, and minute
that you bet ice breaks up on the ticket, and drop it into "Red Can". It's easy. Deadline is the beginning of April.
うわ、この人何枚投函したんでしょ。。
What! . . How many tickets this guy drops. . .
今年の当たりは5月8日午後1時ちょうどだったとか。
全部で8人が当たり、一人あたり38,500ドルの賞金だったそうです。
そのうちの一人は、なんと日本の旅行者の方が当てたとか。国外からは史上初だそうです。
さぞかし旅の良い記念になったでしょうね。
広美はかわいく5枚ほど購入したんですけど、あえなく全滅。。ぐやじぃ〜〜〜。。
まあ何はともあれ、春が来たんだから良しとしましょうか。
The ice broke up at 1:00pm on May 8th in this year. There are eight winners and each winner got 38,500 dollars.
Surprisingly, One of them is from Japan, the first-ever winner from out of the United States.
It must be a good souvenir for her.
I bought five tickets modestly, but I couldn't win. . . How disappointing!
Anyway, I am very glad that spring has come.

Spring,
the spring which people and animals have longed for becomes far well now,
間もなく鳥さんたちは北の空に飛び立ちます。
and birds will fly to the north soon.
そして、フェアバンクスはようやく新緑の季節を迎えます。
Then, the light green season will come to Fairbanks, finally. . .
