北米大陸最北端の町、バロー（１）

Barrow, the northern most town in the Continent of North America vol. 1.
母と母の友人がフェアバンクスに旅行に来たため、北米大陸最北端の町、バローに2泊3日で旅行に行くことにしました。
フェアバンクスからバローには、エスキモー顔でおなじみのアラスカン・エアーで約1時間半で着きます。
My Mom and her friend came to Fairbanks and so I took them for a trip to Barrow, the northern most town in the Continent of
North America, for 2 nights and 3days. It takes one and half hours to arrive in Barrow from Fairbanks
by Alaskan Airlines, whose trademark is native people's face.
人口5000人の町とはいえ、けっこう大きなジェット機が毎日の定期便に使われています。
でもこれ、こんなに毎日乗客がいるんだろうかと思ったら、実は飛行機の前半分が貨物室に改造されていました。
それもそのはず、バローには陸路が無いので、すべての物資は飛行機で運ばれてくるんです。
まあ、道があまり無いアラスカでは特に珍しいことではないですけれどもね。
A big jet is used to dairy flights, considering the population is only 5,000. However, front half of the jet is used for cargo.
It is because there is no road access to Barrow and everything is carried by air. It is not uncommon in Alaska,
where there are few roads.
さて、この旅、Northern Alaska Tour Companyというツアー会社を
利用したため、初日には市内観光が付いていました。で、まずは市内観光。
バロー、人口の60％がイヌピアック・エスキモーとはいえ、実はかなり都会です。
冬はとっても寒いため、人々は車でスーパーマーケットに乗り付けます。
このスーパーも北米最北端だと思うと、感慨深いものがありますね。
ちなみに車も飛行機か夏の間に船で運ばれてくるそうです。
In this time, we asked a tour company, Northern Alaska Tour Company,
for this trip, and half-day town tour was included. At first, we went to the town tour.
Barrow, though in which 60 percent of the population is Inupiat people, is a modernized town actually.
It is very cold in winter and people go to supermarket by a car.
The fact that this supermarket may be the northern most supermarket in North America, makes me feel
something.
Anyway, cars are also carried by air or by ship during summer.
電気だってもちろんありますし、暖房はプルドーベイからの天然ガスで24時間ヌクヌク、水道は近くの池の底から
引いてきているんですって。
There are also electric service, natural gas service carried from Prudhoe Bay by pipeline to keep people warm,
and water service supplied from the bottom of lake near the town.
同じネイティブとはいえ、内陸の
アサバスカン・インディアンたちの暮らしとはぜんぜん違うんだなぁって感心しました。
新田次郎の『アラスカ物語』に出てくるフランク安田の時代とは天地の差なんでしょうねぇ。
でも、少しはイヌピアット・エスキモーさんたちの文化に触れたいなぁと思っていたら、
頼みの綱のイヌピアット博物館のあるイヌピアット・ヘリテージセンターは、なんと、土日はお休み！
I was so surprised that there is much difference from
Athabaskan Indian village placed in Interior Alaska. I tried to find something Inupiat cultural,
but Inupiat Heritage Center, where there is a small Inupiat cultural museum, was closed on
Saturday and Sunday.
今日は土曜日で、最終日月曜は朝の便で出発してしまうので、見られそうにありません。
えええええええ〜〜〜〜〜〜ん。

まあ、博物館がだめでも、鯨の頭骨が町中に置いてあったり、
It is Saturday today and we will leave early morning on Monday, it means we cannot see it!

But we could see skull of whale in the town, instead of the museum,
鯨の骨と、エスキモーのカヌー、ウミアックの骨組みをあしらったモニュメントなんかが
and also a monument of whale bones and Umiak which is Inupiat skin boat.
ありましたけどね。
鯨の漁、捕鯨は今は国際条約で厳しく制限されていますけど、イヌピアット・エスキモーさんたちは
5月に伝統的な漁法で何頭か捕るそうです。そして6月には収穫のお祭りがあるとか。
かつては鯨は食料ばかりでなく、油脂が燃料としても重要でした。周囲がツンドラのバローでは薪になる木が
ありませんからね。今は、もはや鯨漁は彼らの生活を支えているわけではありません。
でも、鯨漁は彼らの最後の文化の砦なんですね。
Whale hunting is strictly restricted by international treaty now, but they still hunt in May
by their traditional way.
There is also a festival to celebrate the harvest of sea in June.
Whale was the most important not only for food, but fuel because there are no trees for firewood here.
Whale hunting no longer supports their life, but supports their cultural soul.
市内観光は2時間くらいで終わり、ホテル、Top of the Worldに戻りますが、
やることがありません。なんせ、寒すぎるんです。お散歩に出ても、一ブロックで引き返してくる始末。。
暇つぶしにバスルームの石鹸でシャボン玉を作ってみました。
The town tour ended in two hours and we went back to the hotel, Top of the World,
but we had hard time to do something. It is too cold here, and only one block is enough distance to take a walk. . . So, we
tried to make soap bubbles.
3月終わりの昼間だというのに、見事に凍りました。
The bubbles froze up, although it was daytime in the end of March!
ところであの、、母さん、お手々も凍ってるんですけど。。
Anyway, Mom, . . your hand is also freezing. . .
