Aurora Highlights of the Year.

ついに大晦日ですね。
今日もオーロラは見れそうにないけど、今年後半、とくにEOS-D30を買ってから撮った
オーロラの写真を見なおしてみることにしました。
It's New Year's eve tonight.
Aurora does not seem to appear tonight, but I checked pictures of auroras taken since
I bought a new digital camera, EOS-D30.

まずは11月23日に撮ったオーロラから。
At first, pictures taken on Nov. 23rd.

これは緑の上に赤が乗ったオーロラですけど、赤い部分が肉眼では見えず、オーロラの上部がちょん切れた写真になってしまいました。それに魚眼の使い方があまりうまくないですね。もうちょっと上を向けたほうが良かったと思います。オーロラがあまり明るくないのでノイズも多いですよね。 Red aurora exists above green one, but I couldn't see red part and cut it off from the frame of picture. And the fisheye lens is not effectively used. I should have had the lens directed upper sky. It's also pretty noisy because aurora was weak.

こっちは上下は全体が写っているけど、左のほうがちょん切れています。オーロラも単純な形になってしまってつまんないですよね。 This picture contains all vertical part of aurora, but doesn't have left part, and the shape of aurora is too simple, ordinary.

ちなみにEF50mmF1.4のレンズでも撮ったのですが、この日はピンぼけの続出で惨敗でした。
EF50mmF1.4の距離目盛って使いづらいなぁ。見る角度によって目盛の読み誤差が発生するんですもの。
昼間のうちにAFで無限大に合わせてMFにして、フォーカスリングも固定するのがいいんだろうけど、
それじゃ他の写真が撮れなくなってしまうし。。
I also used EF50mmF1.4 lens, but most of pictures got unfocused. The distance scale written on EF50mmF1.4 is easy to cause reading error, different view angle on the scale shows different distance. I should have fixed focus ring and switched to MF, after focused to infinity using AF during daytime. But I cannot take other pictures if I always fix the focus to infinity. . .

教訓１：魚眼レンズはなるべく上に向けて使おう！
教訓２：EF50mmF1.4のフォーカスは昼間から準備するか、ファインダーでしっかり合わせるべし。
Lesson 1: Fisheye lens should be directed as upper as possible.
Lesson 2: The focus of EF50mmF1.4 lens should be prepared during daytime, or focused precisely by manual.


次は12月2日に撮ったオーロラ。
Next, pictures taken on Dec. 2nd.

前回の教訓を受けて魚眼レンズをなるべく上に向けて使ったのはいいけど、カメラが傾いていますね。 I had fisheye lens directed as upper as possible, as I learned before, however, the camera is tilted.

これはオーロラが明るくてノイズが少ないけど、惜しいことに車の排気ガスが写っています。木々をきれいに見せるためにフラッシュを使ったのですが、排気ガスなんて暗闇じゃわからなかったよ〜。ちなみにオレンジ色はオーロラではなく町の明かりです。 This aurora was enough strong to reduce noise clearly, but unfortunately, exhaust gas from a car was taken on the picture. I used speedlite to take trees clearly, but I couldn't realize exhaust gas in the darkness! By the way, orange color is not aurora, but city light.

この日は縦位置の魚眼も試してみました。 カメラがおもいっきり傾いている、のではなくオーロラに合わせてわざと斜めにしたんです。露光中に車が通ってくれて、かえって面白い写真が撮れましたね。 I also tested vertical frame of pictures. The camera is tilted? Yes I did, to frame all part of aurora. There is a red line on the road because a car passed through during exposure, but it's not bad.

オーロラが十分明るいときには、ほんとにフィルムカメラよりきれいなのではないかと思うような写真が撮れます。D30を買って良かったと思う瞬間ですね。ちなみにホワイトバランスはこれまでオートで撮ってきたのですが、憶えている色としてはこの写真の色が近い気がします。しかし、実際にはオーロラの色は目に見えないほど暗い場合もあるし、紫外線での発光も強いので、「本当の色」を定義するのは難しいんですけどね。そういう点では、UVフィルタを使うと色が変わってくるかもしれません。 EOS-D30 can take clear picture comparable to film camera when aurora is strong enough, I am really glad of buying it when I get such clear pictures. I had used Auto White Balance before, but the color of this picture seems the true color. However, it is difficult to define "true color" because auroras are often too dark to see with naked eyes and have much UV emission. Since this fact, UV filters may affect the color of pictures.

ちなみにこの日はEF50mmF1.4も大活躍でした。星でばっちりフォーカスを合わせましたから。
By the way, I also took many good pictures using EF50mmF1.4 lens, because I had the lens focused well aiming stars!

この写真は星が見える暗い方向を撮ったので、肉眼ではオーロラの色はよくわからなかったけど、写真はまるでオーロラ紙みたいにきれいですね。 This picture is so colorful, although I took dark side of the sky to focus the lens.

F1.4の明るさのおかげでわずか4秒でこのような写真が撮れました。まるで宇宙からのオーロラの粒子の軌跡がそのまま見えるみたいですよね。EF50mmF1.4のレンズは比較的速いシャッター速度が選べるので、相対的に暗い広角系レンズとは違った味があります。また、光が十分取り込めるためノイズが少ないのもいいですね。 Thanks to fastness of F1.4, exposure time was only 4 seconds. It looks as if aurora particles' trajectory can be seen, doesn't it? EF50mmF1.4 has different taste from wide-angle lenses which are relatively slow. It is also good at anti-noise capability because it can collect more light.

この日の教訓：車の排気ガスには気をつけよう。
ってとこでしょうか。この辺でだいたいD30によるオーロラ撮影のコツが掴めた気がします。

で、次は12月22日に撮影したもの。
Next, taken on Dec. 22nd.

D30では初めての街灯だらけの市街地での撮影だったのですが、けっこううまく撮れました。 This was the first time I took with D30 in the city surrounded by many streetlights. It was better than I expected.

市街地での撮影のコツは、オーロラの出ている方向が開けている場所を探し、近くの街灯の光がレンズに直接入らないようにすることでしょうか。余計な光との戦いになります。しかしちょっと慣れてくると、建物などを入れた撮影に挑戦したくなるんですよね〜。自然現象と人工物の対比が面白いと思うのですが、人工物だけに明るいものが多く、明るいオーロラに恵まれる運や、ちょうどいい明るさの被写体を選ぶ目なんかが必要になります。
Important hints to take pictures of aurora in the city are, to find open space directed to auroras, and to avoid direct incidence of streetlights to lens. That might be struggle against obstacle lights. However, I often prefer to take pictures of auroras with objects like buildings. Comparison between natural phenomena and human-made objects is interesting for me. But, of course, it is often difficult to take this kind of pictures because of brightness of human-made objects. Luck to see bright auroras and eyes to search objects which have suitable brightness are required.

次のは12月25日早朝にアラスカ縦断パイプラインと一緒に撮ったものです。
The next picture was taken with Trans-Alaska pipeline in early morning on Dec. 25th.

まあ、パイプラインは光らないし、近くに街灯も無かったんで簡単に撮れるんですけどね。 Actually, it was easy to take this picture because pipeline does not emit lights and there was no streetlight around there.

アラスカの象徴、オーロラとパイプラインがいっしょに写っているのってかっこいいと思いませんか？　あとは北斗七星が写っていたらなおいいかなぁ。オーロラもできればカラフルなやつを。。なんちて贅沢ですね。しかしこの日はあまりオーロラが強くなくややノイズが多いので、パイプラインとオーロラはそのうちもう一度撮り直したいと思います。
Don't you think pictures of aurora taken with the pipeline is cool, which both are symbols of Alaska? I also want the Big Dipper taken on the same picture, and more colorful aurora, . . that's may be too much demand. But this picture is pretty noisy because of weak aurora, so I will take again sometime.

う〜ん、11月、12月はオーロラが弱い上に天気があまり良くなかったため、
あまりいい機会に恵まれませんでしたね。
ちなみにオーロラの強弱は約一ヶ月の周期があると言われているので、
次は来年の1月22〜25日あたりがねらい目かもしれませんね。
来年はもっときれいなオーロラが撮れますように。。。
Uh, There were not so many good chances to take aurora because auroras were weak and
weather was generally not good, on this November and December.
I heard intensity of auroras has one-month cycle, which means
next peak should be Jan 22-25th in the next year!
I hope, I hope I can take more beautiful pictures next year.
