アークティック・ビレッジへの旅（１）

Trip to Arctic Village vol.1.
広美はアークティック・ビレッジというところに2泊3日で旅行に行きました。
アークティック・ビレッジは北極圏の境界の北約180km、ブルックス山脈の山麓に位置する
グイッチン・インディアンの村です。
グイッチン・インディアンは、数万年の昔の氷河期に陸続きだったベーリング海峡をアジアから
渡って来たと言われ、南米のインカ帝国など高度の文化を築いた人々の遠い親戚にあたります。
I, Hiromi, tripped to Arctic Village for three days.
Arctic Village is a Gwich'in Indian village existing 116 miles north from
the Arctic Circle, beside Brooks Range.
Gwich'in people are thought that they came from Asia several ten
thousand years ago in the glacial era, and they are cousin of people who
made high civilization such as Inca Empire in South America.

村の人口は約百人、厳しい自然に守られた彼らは、今では英語化教育こそ受けているものの、
年配の人々の間では、独自の言語、グィッチン語を話すなど、オリジナルの文化を色濃く
残しています。
彼らが貨幣経済に本格的に組み込まれたのがアラスカ縦断パイプラインが建設された70年代、
村に電気が来たのが80年代だそうです。陸路は無く、フェアバンクスからの小型飛行機が唯一の
村への交通手段です。
下の写真の飛行機の前に写っている自動車が、村で唯一の自動車です。
飛行場から村まで荷物を運ぶために持ち込まれたようです。
The population of village is approximately one hundred. They still keep original culture such as
their own language spoken among elder people, due to severe nature preventing white culture coming.
It is in seventies that they are exposed money economy when Alaska pipeline was built, and in eighties
that electricity came to this village. No road to there and small airplane is the only access to the village.
The car shown on the bellow picture is the only car in the village imported to carry freight between
airport and the village.
村にはホテルは一軒もありませんので、村民の家にホームスティします。
電気はあるものの、水道はありません。暖房は薪ストーブです。
There was no hotel in village and I stayed in villagers house.
there was electricity, but no running water, and wood stoves are common.
おまけにトイレは屋外．．．
And also, bathroom is outhouse. . .
泊めていただく家の人に「ハニーバケットはいるか？」って聞かれました。
ハニーバケットって何だと思います？
大便の時や女の人とかが-40℃の中で用を足すのは大変なので、家の中で
用を足すときに使う空き缶のことなんです。
とはいえ、人のいる脇で用を足すのは、ちょっといやですよね。
-40℃の中で用を足した方がまだマシですので断ってしまいました。
Host asked me whether I need a "honey bucket." What do you think "honey bucket" is?
It is a can to use as a toilet in house for women or men shitting because
it is too hard to have a wash in forty bellow zero.
But I said no thanks because I don't want to do it beside somebody.
I prefer to do outside in forty bellow zero.
さて、広美の今回の旅の目的は、カリブーとオーロラを見ることです。
ガイドの人に頼んでさっそくカリブーを見に行きました。
村での交通手段はかつては犬ぞりでしたが、今ではスノーモービルが主役です。
Anyway, the purpose of this trip was to see caribous and auroras.
I asked a guide to take me to somewhere caribous can be seen.
Dog sleds were used for transportation before, but now snow machines are used instead.
ちょっと村の外に出ると、さっそくお目当てのカリブーが湖の上にいました。
I could see caribous on a lake after a short while.
しかし遠すぎて豆粒のようにしか見えません。そこで、ガイドさんにもっと近づいてもらうように
お願いしました。
But caribous were so far that I couldn't see well. So, I asked guide to go closer.

カリブーたちがこちらに気づくと、ガイドさんはスノーモービルを全開にしました。
カリブーたちは一目散に逃げていきます。
When caribous realized us, guide opened throttle full.
Caribous also run away at full speed.

突然、スノーモービルの速度が落ち始め、ガイドさんが「降りろ、降りろ」って言いだしました。
スノーモービルはほとんど停止し、次第に沈んで行きます。スノーモービルを降りると
雪の下は氷ではなく水でした。スノーモービルのエンジンを吹かすたびに雪混じりの水しぶきが上がります。
結局、靴を濡らしながら、ガイドさんと一緒にスノーモービルを引き上げる羽目になりました。
湖の真中まで逃げおおせたカリブーが歯をむき出して笑うのが見えたような、見えなかったような。。。
Suddenly, the snow machine slowed down and guide shouted me "get off! get off!". Snow machine almost
stopped and began to sink. I realized here was on the water, not ice! Snow machine splashed ice and
water but it hadn't moved anymore. I and guide had to pull it up to the lakeside. I could see caribous
grinning in the center of the lake, or not. . .
靴を濡らしてしまったためこの日はこれで引き上げることになりました。
I went back today because I got my boots wet. . .
